It’s not just the fact that these buildings are abandoned that makes them so creepy in some cases.
1 The Ryugyong Hotel, Pyongyang, North Korea
This pyramid-shaped tower block in North Korea is quite the oddity. The high-rise hotel consists of a staggering 105 stories and was abandoned for 16 years when famine struck the country. In a move that can only be described as utter madness, the North Koreans proceeded to cover the building in $150 million worth of glass in 2008. Nevertheless, visitors have described the building as largely abandoned despite it now looking finished on the outside. Would you visit this hotel of horrors?
2 UFO Houses, San Zhi, Taiwan
These apartments look more like something from a sci-fi movie than living spaces for U.S. military officers as was their intended purpose. Construction began in the late 70’s but was put to a halt in 1980 when investment was lost, thus they were left abandoned.
3 Bannerman Castle, Pollepel Island, New York
This castle with its faded colouring and hints of red due to the climbing flowers on its walls was built by Francis Bannerman VI, hence the name. Its intended purpose was as a storage space for US forces during the war with the Spanish. However, 200lb of ammunition exploded in 1920 leaving the castle in ruins. It seems that building a castle for storage space is somewhat extravagant anyway...
4 Chateau Miranda, Celles, Belgium
This Belgian castle looks just like the setting for a Stephen King novel. In reality, the castle was built as a hiding place for French aristocrats who escaped the revolution. Thereafter, it was used as an orphanage during World War II. The family who owned Chateau Miranda abandoned it in 1980 and refused to let authorities care for it which is rather odd indeed. Perhaps they fled a flurry of ghosts and didn’t want anyone else to be subject to such terror!
5 Orpheum Auditorium, New Bedford, Massachusetts
Peculiarly, this auditorium was first opened on the date the Titanic sunk on 15th April 1912. Surely, that’s a bad omen? It was later deserted and remains beautifully intact to this day.
